The sea and Borgo Marina
To really get to know the nautical side of the town, we recommend taking a walk to the old harbour at Borgo Marina. At the start of the 1900s, this was still home to a community of fishermen, families who had arrived here during the 19th century from the river Po plains, following the ancient salt trading routes. The salt workers were known as “magna pes”, or “fish eaters”. On the row of distinctive little cottages overlooking the port, you can still hear the echoes of their names: Penso, Padoan, Beltrami, Bonaldo, Foli, Lucci, whilst on the front of the buildings you can see ceramic tiles depicting coloured sails, the symbol of each family.
Borgo Marina is considered by everyone to be the historic heart of the town. To learn more about its past, you can explore the area on one of the heritage walks promoted by the FESTA Association, dedicated to the sea. Afterwards, unwind at one of the many bars in Borgo Marina for a sunset aperitif among the fishermen who sing songs and play guitar.
