The Salt Warehouses

There are two salt warehouses in the old port: Magazzino Torre and Magazzino Darsena. Both of these warehouses overlook the port, built in 1691 and 1712 respectively, before the town was moved from the salt pans to nearer to the sea.

They were needed to store the precious “white gold” produced in the salt pans in the months from March to October. The salt would be loaded onto flat-bottom boats to be transported down the canal from the salt pans to the port. These days, they are no longer used as warehouses but they remain a stunning example of industrial archaeology.

If you decide to visit them, take a close look at the walls where, despite the restoration work, you can still see traces of the salt which has soaked into them over the years. The Magazzino Torre is home to the Salt Museum, MUSA, which tells the story of an important part of Cervia’s history, alongside some temporary exhibitions. The Magazzino Darsena has become part of the “Salt Dock” project, home to cafés, restaurants, and a spa.

Along with the Torre San Michele, a tower built to defend the port from attack by pirates, the warehouses are some of the town’s oldest buildings and an important link to our past.
