Salina Camillone - Museo open air

Salina Camillone Salina Camillone

Last of the 144 production saltworks active until 1959, when the production system became mechanized and the basins were merged into large evaporation and collection tanks. Today the Camillone Salina remains, an integral part and open air section of MUSA – Demonstrative Salt Museum to raise awareness of the hard work of the salt workers. The fund can produce from 500 to 2000 quintals of salt per season. Throughout the summer period, from June to September, guided tours are held by the Civiltà Salinara cultural group in order to show the various phases of the salt harvesting activity. The salt produced by Salina Camillone has been a slow food presidium since 2004. Anyone wishing to experience the thrill of taking on the role of a salt worker can participate in Salinaro for a day and spend an afternoon side by side with the salt workers, taking part in the salt processing activities, learning a bit of that art that has allowed the production of white gold for centuries.
