The Cervia Archaeology project sees the participation of the University of Bologna, the Municipality of Cervia-MUSA, the Salt Museum, the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the provinces of Ravenna, Forlì-Cesena and Rimini, the Gruppo Culturale Civiltà Salinara and the Cervia Saltpan Park. The rich programme of initiatives includes open days in the excavation area and presentations of the results.

Over the years, many archaeological discoveries have been made as a result of the investigation and excavation campaign at the two sites:

  • Cervia Vecchia
It stood in the heart of the saltpan area and was abandoned during the 18th century due to the relocation of its inhabitants to where it still stands today. Thanks to a series of archaeological surveys, we are beginning to understand the state of conservation and depth of the archaeological remains and study the topography of the ancient town.
  • Lawn of the Rose
In the area, a series of structures have been found in the centre of a cemetery area and also a large church, probably the ancient Cathedral of Ficocles, the episcopal centre that preceded Cervia Vecchia.

In order to offer citizens and interested persons the opportunity to view and explain the activities carried out and the new findings during the current excavation campaign, the Municipality of Cervia and the University of Bologna are organising free guided tours of the archaeological site.
