Apparition of the Virgin Mary to St Philip Neri

Apparition of the Virgin Mary to St Philip Neri Apparition of the Virgin Mary to St Philip Neri
Guido Reni (1575 - 1642) (copy), “Apparition of the Virgin Mary to St Philip Neri”

The original is in Rome, painted by Guido Reni and kept in St Philip Neri chapel in Santa Maria church in Vallicella.

The copy in Cervia was commissioned by Francesco Maria Merlini, the bishop of the city from 1635 to 1644, as indicated by the his coat of arms on the canvas. (Gori, 2001).

Foschi suggested that it was one of the works of art moved from the Cervia Vecchia cathedral, along with the altar of St Philip (Foschi, 1977). A similar copy can be seen in Cesena's San Domenico church (Arcangeli, 1964; Arcangeli - Pulini, 2021).”
