The Salt Walk
The Salt Walk is back, the pilgrimage organised by the Salt Civilisation Cultural Group together with the Circolo Culturale Clodovea di Savio and the Associazione Via Romea Germanica, which re-enacts the ancient tradition of paying homage to the Pope with Cervia's salt.
In fact, the origin of the rite dates back to 1444, when Cardinal Pietro Barbo was appointed bishop of Cervia and, as a thank you, gave Pope Eugene IV the precious white gold.
The appointment has been repeated every year since 2017, with a route that follows the Via Romea Germanica for 12 days of walking through the Apennines and 11 stages before reaching the Vatican and handing over the salt to Pope Francis together with the mayor.
The programme and stages of the 2024 event are being finalised.
Anyone wishing to participate, even if only in some of the days or stages of the walk, can contact the event organisation.
